Local motor parts export to US

ACCORDING to a recent official news agency report, Bangladesh for the first time will export ‘potential light engineering products’ to the United States ushering in a new horizon in the country’s industrial sector. Three automobile part samples worth US$ 15,000 will be exported initially to a US company and the exportable items include bumper breaker, lower control crown, moulding piston, grill and fender. A deal was signed in this regard last month when the industries minister of the incumbent government expressed the hope that although the order is small in size, it is just the beginning of entrance of the country’s products, especially of Dholaikhal-fame, to the US market.

On the basis of quality assurance of the spare parts, Bangladesh may get more orders from others. A tripartite memorandum of understanding was signed among three sides – the US company, Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre and Bangladesh Engineering Industry Owners Association. The signatories to the MOU expressed the hope that they would carry forward the initiatives for their mutual benefit. The most interesting aspect is that many urgently required automobile and other engineering spare parts are produced in the Dholaikhal area in the capital and meet the domestic demand.

The representative of the US company termed the order as simple which however, can prove to be a big step towards wider export expansion for Bangladesh that successfully entered US market for readymade garments and some other products. Local engineering industry owners claimed that the sample products for US market are as good as the products of Taiwan and India and mentioned infrastructures and utility shortages as ‘major hurdles’ in the way of making investment in the sub-sector. They are in dire need of government assistance and patronisation besides a congenial industrial policy.
