Bangladesh Picks Indian Company to Build Power Plant

Bangladesh Power Development Board has approved a proposal by an Indian energy firm to install a 150 megawatt power plant, a senior official said on Wednesday.

"The proposal will now be sent to government purchase committee to take final decision," said M. Fouzul Kabir Khan, secretary of the power division of the ministry of power, energy and mineral resources.

It will be installed in northeastern Sylhet area with a cost of more than $70 million by the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Kabir said.

"The gas-based power plant will be set up on a turn-key contract basis," he said. Last year the Indian company was awarded another contract to build two plants at Siddhirganj, near Dhaka, with a generation capacity of 120 MW each, another senior official said.
